One of the most damning sentences
in the whole article is this:
"Though primarily a pretrial center,
it houses some sentenced inmates."
The great majority of the people that are held at Rikers have not been convicted of any crime,
and cannot afford to post bail.
And we put them into this hellhole.
By doing so,
the poorest segment of our society
(and those that are mentally troubled)
have been deemed deserving
of potentially serious bodily harm
and punishment
-punishment without trial
-punishment before trial.
No bail, no judge, no jury, no conviction
and no real protection from themselves or others
- just arbitrary punishment.
Whatever else this is,
whoever is to blame,
this is not justice.
It is a mockery of justice.
And it goes on and on,
....in our name,
....with our knowledge,
....and with our silent consent.
For how long?

The Oligarchs have got their way,
Put stumbling blocks in Voters' way,
Not the upper percenters,
The poor struggling renters,
To ease the Republican way.

Let's dedicate help so that we
Help poor folk to get their ID,
Beat Repubs at their game
Get to vote all the same,
And get around chicanery!

there once was a player named melo
a most surly irascible fellow
then along came phil
with his game magic pill
that turned him into a bowl of jello

Who's going to jail? WHO'S GOING TO JAIL???
people died. Who's going to jail?
Somebody better be going to jail.

It is a major change and a challenge for our foreign policy.
Peter Baker has left out any mention of Russian viewpoint
on International order and particularly the treatment of Russia.
Russians are unanimous that America never kept its promise
made to them in 1991 especially with regard to expanding
NATO( sorrounding Russia). Bill Clinton basically exploited
his personal relationship with inebriated Boris Yeltsen to ignore
Russian interest.Even Gorbachev has said it many times.
Mr. slick willy didn't lay out good foundation for
American-Russian relations. Putin, a staunch nationalist,seemed
to have had repressed hostilityn against America in reaction to
Bill Clinton's policy. He did cooperate on Iran sanctions, Libyan
invasion, troops and supplies movement to Afghanistan and nuclear
arms reduction. But he refused to be Britain.
It is a major set back for American policy. This policy was predicated
on China as a major adversary and "reset" with Russia was about
getting Russians on board to contain China along with Japan and
India. Now Russia and India are out. The policy requires major
rethinking.
